The magnificent Zainab wreck is planned for this week
Previously named the Seasroun Five, the Zainab was a general cargo ship sailing under a Georgian flag, originally designed for transporting goods. The vessel, with two large cargo holds, had been converted to carry about 1,300 tons of light fuel oil illegally transported from Iraq. In 2001, as part of an effort to avoid capture by the US Navy, which was enforcing UN sanctions on Iraq, the crew deliberately sank the ship. This act resulted in a major oil spill, dangerously close to offshore gas pipelines.
Measuring over 80 meters long, the Zainab was a significant vessel, with its machinery and crew quarters strategically placed to conceal the illicit cargo. Since sinking, the wreck has evolved into a thriving artificial reef, attracting a variety of marine species. The remains of the ship are now home to small oysters, schools…
